A Wedding in Vegas

Las Vegas – Monday 13 May

Michael & Melanie’s wedding day was already hot and heading to 39 plus.

Caesar's PalaceWe headed out late for brunch, walking north towards the Wynn resort casino (opposite Fashion Show) exploring along the way.Wynn courtyard    This resort is very upmarket with lots of high end retail, a great courtyard garden and the buffet is superb according to reports.  Wynn courtyardWell the buffet line was far too lengthy, so we walked further to the restaurant overlooking the pool.  We returned to the Cosmopolitan by taxi.

At 4pm we walked, with cameras already set up, from the South Tower to the main tower and up to the suite selected for the occasion.  Quite a hike along the first floor, avoiding the busy casino floor.  The celebrant and others arrived 4.30pm and about 5pm the very brief ceremony commenced followed by the professional pictures and the cutting of the cake.

At 8pm we headed out for dinner (via our room for a quick change) across the road at PF Changs.  A relaxed dinner brought an end to our part of the wedding celebration.  It was great that Michael & Melanie had nine friends join them to mark the occasion.

Las Vegas to Waikiki – Tuesday 14 May

Another hot day but we were heading west on a 1320 flight to Hawaii via LA.  The flight was OK but full and somewhat cramped.  We checked in and then went out for a late but quick Japanese meal.

Grand Canyon overview

Las Vegas – Sunday 12 May

DSC00976Views along the Grand CanyonA late start for breakfast on Mothers’ Day before our limo pickup for the 1pm Papillon flight to the Grand Canyon.  The comfortable flight took 90 minutes for the return trip.  The landscape was barren, the river changed colour from green to blue to murky, the skywalk seemed so insignificant, and the Hoover dam so small!

Returning to the strip, we walked to Paris (lots of eateries there), Bally’s & then to Margaritaville at the Flamingo on the recommendation of our Canadian friends.  Of course we indulged in a fine margarita.  IMG_0529The food is also said to be good but we did not sight a food menu.  The
casino was probably the happiest we have seen.

Michael & Mel met us for dinner at Milos in the Cosmopolitan.  A fine Greek restaurant, good food, tasty tzatziki sauce, great feta, lots of fish (flown in daily!), and a great catch-up.

Las Vegas – Saturday 11 May

DSC00968A quick breakfast at The Henry in the Cosmopolitan before Michael, Mel & Kenny joined us for coffee.  Then we headed towards MGM Grand (the opposite direction to yesterday’s stroll) via Monte Carlo & New York.  MGM is huge – it has the largest gambling space and the walk distances were also extensive.  A taxi back to the Cosmopolitan for a rest at 3pm.

DSC00971This evening we thought we would try our luck at another restaurant (Le Cirque) in the Bellagio.  Unfortunately we could not walk in.  So after checking/booking via the Concierge, we took a taxi to the Mandarin Oriental – the only hotel without a casino – and had a memorable dinner at Twist.

We walked back to our hotel.

Exploring the strip

Las Vegas – Friday 10 May

DSC00965To the Bellagio to start our walking tour of Las Vegas, and our inspection took us to the Conservatory then to the Bellagio Café for a great breakfast.  After collecting our show tickets, we continued to Caesar’s Palace, Harrah’s and the mono rail.  A round trip gave a good overview.  Back to the start we headed for Treasure Island (tired), then the Venetian which was great.  From the canals to St Mark’s Square, there was a good feeling.  Resumed our journey to the A great showFashion Show (opposite Wynn) where Joy found good shopping.  Walked back to Caesar’s (past the Colosseum) and stopped for liquid refreshment before continuing the walk back to the Cosmopolitan.

The evening took us to the Bellagio for ‘O’ – a wonderful display of synchronised swimming and high diving by Cirque du Soleil; the show  has been running since Bellagio opened 15 years ago.  A late dinner at Michael Mina – also in the Bellagio.

Travelling

Sydney to Las Vegas – Thursday 9 May

IMG_0514A travelling day, after a short sleep. Limo to the airport was excellent. Qantas Economy was OK, uneventful. Joy watched five movies, Les three.

Entry to US in Los Angeles was fine, transfer of luggage to next flight was good, a short wait and then the short flight to Las Vegas. AmIMG_0521azing desert views on approach with the strip visible. Airport quite close.

Arrived Cosmopolitan and checked in immediately around midday. Unpacked, Joy slept, Les fixed phones. Emerged for a stroll around the hotel, an early dinner at Comme Ça – quiet, good food, great view.
