Nagasaki 2023

Easter Sunday 9 April

Kyushu

A beautiful (short) day in Nagasaki – our 5th visit and the 2nd visit this trip.

After navigating customs, we were free to explore the city again.  Once again our carefully laid out plan was discarded and we headed for Chinatown and then Dejima looking for purchases!

We spent some time in and around Dejima and Dejima Port (from where we could see the Diamond, said to be only a 15 minute walk away).  Dejima is an artificial island to which Dutch workers were restricted during Japan’s era of isolation.  The area is now being restored and includes historical buildings museum and miniature model of the former island.

Shared noodles for our rest stop.

Next, we tried the Hamano-machi Shopping Street/Arcades – again unsuccessfully.

Negotiating the trams proved confusing – we ended up at Nagasaki Station because we forgot to change at Chinatown, so hailed a cab back to the ship.

An early 1530 sailaway for a day at sea tomorrow en route to Yokohama on Tuesday.

Our plan was:

  1. Take #3 tram 10 stops to City Hall (Stop# 19) (19m) – for Meganebaski Bridge
  2. Take #5 tram 3 stops to Shinchi Chinatown Stn (#37 stop) (6m) – for Dejima
  3. Change to #1 tram for 4 stops to Sofukuji Temple (Stop #31)
  4. Taxi to Dutch Slope – or return to Shinchi Chinatown Stn via #1 tram, then #5 tram 1 stop to Medical Centre Stn, then walk 350m/4m to Dutch Slope
  5. Return to Port

There’s always next time!
