Kotor – revisited

Kotor was one of the highlights of our cruise. Not only did we call once but we arrived again 14 days later. Contrasting arrivals and departures, an energy-soaking hike up the City Walls and an excursion to Perast were all experiences we looked forward to and enjoyed in this ancient city at the head of a picturesque fjord in Montenegro

A return visit to Kotor

Tue, Jun 18 Kotor, Montenegro (Tender)

An early morning awakening as we re-entered the fjord leading to Kotor.  On this occasion, Les visited Deck 15 above the bridge for the early morning arrival.

An early meeting for our excursion also, on a very hot humid day (but not as hot as the previous day, we were told). A 45 minute cruise to Our Lady of the Rocks Island led us to ‘Gospa od Skrpjela’ Baroque church which we inspected along with the museum.  Then re-boarding the boat for a short journey to Perast, we visited another museum and then found a café for refreshments.  Perast is said to be one of the best-preserved Baroque cities in Montenegro.  It flourished in the 1700’s due to its busy shipyards.

Kotor, Montenegro

Tue, Jun 4       Kotor, Montenegro (Tender) 07:00 AM    03:00 PM

Kotor lies at the head of Boka Bay. Bordered by towering limestone cliffs, the winding bay is actually Southern Europe’s longest and most dramatic fjord. We woke as we sailed up the fjord and through heavy fog before anchoring around 0700.  We were followed in by the Celebrity Constellation.

After breakfast we quickly boarded a tender for shore and headed for the old walled town.

The port itself is a medieval gem: its narrow, asymmetrical streets are lined with ancient stone houses, old palaces, and churches dating from the 12th century.

We entered the West Gate, then found the North Gate and made our way up (and down!) most of the 1350 steps.  We didn’t quite make it to the top due to the size of some of the steps in the last section – but the views were magnificent.  Learn some more at these links.

Castel St John, Illyrian fort

We found the hole in the wall and watched some travellers enter from the path on the other side, having walked up the road.  The road – once you get onto it – is actually a zig zag path and should have been a better descent than the steps which we took.

The steps/path towards the bottom were tricky and once on level ground we headed straight back to the tenders for a shower and a drink.  In all, the walk took us 2.5 hours.  Sailaway was at 3pm and we took some some spectacular scenery from aft.

We attended the Captain’s Circle Cocktail Party at 1700. There are 485 Platinum members onboard and 265 Elite.  718 days was the top by a lady from Victoria, then 591 & 569 – our 224 days has a long way to go!
